Devante Waites Achievement Project: The Devante Waites Foundations is a nonprofit agency providing mentoring programs for middle and high school youth in the Greater North Central region. The program will form partnerships with local school districts and the juvenile court system. The Devante’ Waites Foundation’s goal is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. Only through personal relationships can a sense of individual responsibility be reestablished that will give youth the commitment to follow through on a path to adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Through repeated failures in the classroom and the development of destructive habits, at-risk young people have lost faith in the possibilities that await them if they are successful in putting their lives together. To accomplish this goal, young people must be in a caring, inclusive learning environment that promotes their best effort and reinforces personal respect.
The Devante Waites Foundation's mentoring programs will pair a youth with mentor for 12 months. During that time the two will participate in weekly
planned activities to strengthen the relationship between the two and improve the young person's confidence and hopefulness. Mentors will receive continuous training throughout the year and will participate in monthly meeting to report the young person's progress.
The children in the city’s core must have the opportunity for a successful start in education and sports regardless of age, race, gender, family composition, income or community. In response to this significant disparity, the DW3 Sports Campaign will be created to provide the sports program necessary for Fairmont children to have equal opportunity for organized sports. DW3 will look to collaborate with local entities to provide social and community support for the events.
Scholarships: Under the scholarship program, the Devante Waites Foundation, Inc. will collect money and provide scholarships and financial assistance to disadvantage children. These scholarships will be used to help students participate in extra—curricular educational activities (museums, art galleries, field trips), and to defray the high cost of advanced education towards college and/or private school. This program will specifically seek out children from low income families who might otherwise be unable to participate in these educational activities. The program will be conducted throughout the year in West Virginia. It furthers the exempt purposes of Devante Waites Foundation, Inc. by providing education to needy children.
